Biographical Information

Harry "Curley" Byrd pitched for the San Francisco Seals in 1912 after a sucessful college football career playing for Georgetown University as a graduate student. In 1913 Byrd was named head coach of both the football and baseball teams at University of Maryland, then known as Maryland Agricultural College. In 1915 he became the school's Athletic Director. In 1923 he stepped down as the baseball coach after putting up a 88-73-4 record. He would continue on as football coach until 1934 leading them to a 117-82-15 record. In 1932 he became school president. He stepped down from that post in 1954 to run for Governor of Maryland, but lost the election. He would also run unsuccessfully for the Senate and Congress. To this day the the University of Maryland football team plays at Byrd Stadium.
