Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Hector Lara played in the minor leagues from 1948 to 1955. In his second campaign, with the El Paso Texans in 1949, he hit .334/.445/.548 with 16 home runs, 11 triples, 19 steals, 107 RBI, 109 runs scored, 91 walks and just 50 strikeouts in 125 games. He finished in the top-ten in the Arizona-Texas League in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS. Back with El Paso in 1950, he one-upped himself by hitting .356 with a .620 slugging mark in 136 games; he had 28 home runs with 44 doubles and 191 hits. He led the league in home runs and tied Len Noren for second in the league in doubles, behind Dick Zwainz's 49. He was also third in slugging and total bases (333). He was taken by the Fayetteville A's of the Philadelphia Athletics system in the B-level round of the 1950 Rule V Draft. He fell to .293 with Fayetteville in 1951, but still finished second in the Carolina League with 26 home runs, behind Ray Jablonski and Carl Miller, who both had 28. He finished second in the Mexican League in home runs with 20 in 1954, behind René González's 21. In his final pro campaign, back with Mexico City in 1955, he hit .273/.398/.505 with 20 home runs and 76 RBI in 91 games. He finished third in the league in home runs, behind Mario Ariosa (22 HR) and Alonzo Perry (21 HR).
