Biographical Information

Gus Suhr was signed by the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in 1925. Initially a second baseman, he hit .314 with 22 homers and 133 RBIs for the club in 1928 and led the PCL with 64 doubles. The next year, 1929, he moved to first base and hit .381 with 51 home runs and 177 RBI while pacing the circuit with 196 runs scored. He joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1930 and was a regular with them for most of the 1930s, playing in a then-National League record 822 consecutive games from September 11, 1931 to June 4, 1937. He ended his big league career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1940, then came out of retirement in 1943 to play three seasons with the Seals during World War II.

Suhr started out his career in semi-pro ball in California. In 1924 he played first base with the Eureka club, and did very well. He was well regarded, and an incomplete survey of his games shows him hitting .318, with 4 doubles and 7 runs batted in in 5 games.

His son, Gus Suhr Jr., hit two home runs in one inning in a game in the California League in 1954.
