Biographical Information[edit]
Gurdon Whiteley played major league baseball in 1884-85.
Prior to coming to the majors, he had played for a Chicago "reserve team", a minor league team set up to play in the Chicago ballpark when the major league team was on the road. The 1884 Cleveland Blues purchased him from Chicago.
In 1886 he tied for the league lead in home runs in the New England League, playing for a team in Newburyport that moved to Lynn in mid-season.
While with the 1885 Beaneaters he was four years older than teammate and future Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy. McCarthy mostly played left field while Whiteley mostly played right field.
