Gopher ball is a baseball term used to indicate a home run. The phrase is usually employed in reference to a pitcher allowing a home run rather than the act of a batter hitting one. The origin is likely the result of the pitchers exclamation of disgust; "That'll go for extra bases", shortened to "Go For" or "Gopher".
