Gloversville, NY
Gloversville is located in the foothills of the Adirondacks in northern New York, 30 miles northwest of Schenectady, NY, 3 miles north of Johnstown, NY and 10 miles northwest of Amsterdam, NY. The three cities were the heart of the state's leatherworking district, with Gloversville specialized in the manufacture of gloves. The city's fortunes hit the skids when the demand for custom-made leather gloves declined precipitously in the 1950s, and it has yet to recover its former prosperity.
