Biographical Information[edit]

Giulio Montanini has had many roles in Italian baseball.

He began as a catcher in 1965 with his hometown Parma club, hitting .256/.341/.321 but threw out only 10 of 68 attempted base-stealers. In '66, he was 2 for 11 with two walks and a double. During 1967, he went 2 for 17 with three walks. In 1968, Montanini went only 2 for 27 with two walks. He was 1 for 10 in 1969, 2 for 4 with 4 walks in 1970 and 1 for 2 with a double in 1971.

Montanini hit .201/.304/.248 overall in 149 AB over 56 games in Italy. He was made head coach of Parma in 1975 and led them to their first title ever in 1976; that year, they lost only 3 games, the best record in league history. He took his team to two Italian titles and two European Cups in five years at the reigns.

Montanini has worked with the Italian national team (as technical staff) and Italian junior national team, holding one role or the other from 1971-2000; he also coached for Italy in the 1978 Amateur World Series. In 2010, he became Head of Player Development for Parma. He was inducted into the Italian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.
