Biographical Information[edit]

Gerry Fraley was a baseball beat writer for nearly four decades. He was principally based in his hometown of Clearwater, FL, but also worked in Atlanta, GA and Arlington, TX, covering the local major league baseball team in each location. In Clearwater, he covered the Philadelphia Phillies who held their spring training there, then moved to Atlanta in 1982. For 25 years, from 1989 to 2006, he was the national baseball writer for the Dallas Morning News, then eventually became the "Super General Assignment Reporter" for the paper, a role that was created especially for him and allowed him to work from Clearwater. He worked briefly for The Sporting News, but returned to the Morning Herald in 2009.

He was a close friend of President George W. Bush, who was owner of the Texas Rangers when he covered the team. He served as president of the Baseball Writers Association of America in 1987, while he was working for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

He was honored posthumously with the BBWAA Career Excellence Award in 2023, as part of the 2024 Hall of Fame Class. He had passed away from cancer in 2019.
