Biographical Information[edit]

George Popplein may have played one game in the National Association. There is some uncertainty regarding this as researcher Peter Morris claims that it may have been one of his brothers.[1]

Brian McKenna has a great site on early Baltimore baseball which includes a biography of Popplein. He was part of an amateur club in Baltimore starting in 1861, and played amateur ball all through the 1860s. He had three brothers who were also active in amateur ball. After baseball he became a paint manufacturer and a chemist. He died of kidney disease in 1901. Source: Early Baltimore Baseball, Part 10.
