George Donaldson Murphy

Biographical Information[edit]

George Murphy was mayor of Hickory, NC from 1977-1981. He served in the US Army during the Korean War and was public address announcer for the Hickory Rebels from 1946-1954. He helped lead efforts to bring baseball back to Hickory, which resulted in the Hickory Crawdads in 1993. In 2014, he was posthumously inducted into the South Atlantic League Hall of Fame.
