Biographical Information[edit]

"George McVey made quite a reputation as a catcher and outfielder in the Southern League." - Sporting Life of Sept. 23, 1885

"Big George McVey is playing a good game at first . . . and is hitting at a four hundred gait." - Sporting Life of Aug. 10, 1895

George McVey, often called "Big George McVey", played six games in the majors in 1885 a few days after he turned 20 years old. He started in the minors at age 18, and had played the summer prior to his untimely death in May 1896.

It was reported by Sporting Life of April 11, 1896 that he was in the hospital with bowel troubles. He had offers from at least two clubs, but was unable to accept.
