Biographical Information

George McConnell, who played six seasons in the big leagues, became a star when he led the 1915 Federal League with 25 wins.

He had been primarily a first baseman in the minors through 1907 and mostly played first base during his first season in the majors in 1909. Oddly, though, he had already largely turned to pitching during 1908-09 in the minors, going 17-12 with Buffalo in 1908 and 9-3 in the Eastern League in 1909.

His best year with the bat in the majors was in 1912 when he hit .297 in 91 at-bats. He pitched in 23 games that year out of 42 total appearances.

His pitching in the minors hit a peak in 1911 when he went 30-8 for Rochester. In 1910, when he won 19 games for Rochester, he also hit .333 for the team.
