Biographical Information[edit]

George Disch was in the majors in 1905 with the Detroit Tigers and had an ERA of 2.64 in 8 games. George was a pitcher who converted to the outfield in 1908, and had apparently played a fair amount in the field prior to that also.

It is not clear why Detroit did not keep Disch. His ERA in 1905 was almost the same as that of Wild Bill Donovan, and it was better than that of young prospect Eddie Cicotte. Cicotte also did not stick with the team. According to his SABR bio, he did not stick around after a promising debut because owner Frank Navin received an attractive offer from the St. Paul Saints of the American Association and took it, figuring he had enough pitching.

George made his debut with the Tigers in August, the same month that a young prospect named Ty Cobb also made his major league debut with the team.

His brother Billy Disch played and managed in the minors, then coached the University of Texas baseball team from 1911-1939, winning a spot in the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
