Biographical Information[edit]
George Darby pitched in four games for the 1893 Cincinnati Reds, an above-.500 team. He was also on minor league teams from 1890-98.
Darby was born in Kansas City, MO. Clark Griffith was also born the same year in Missouri.
George moved around more than most players in the minors. In the western part of the country, he played for teams such as Spokane, Sacramento, San Francisco and Portand. In the middle of the country he was with teams like Peoria, Helena, Kansas City and Omaha. In the eastern part of the country he was on teams such as Atlanta and Portland (Maine). The book Baseball in Toledo has a photo of him with the 1897 Toledo Mud Hens.
The book Iron Man McGinnity: A Baseball Biography mentions a game in which Joe McGinnity was pitching for Kansas City and Darby hit a home run for the team. The book doesn't mention how Darby, normally a pitcher, got into the game. The book does say that Darby, who was from Kansas City, was the only Kansas City native on the 1894 team and had won 22 games for Atlanta the previous season.
