Biographical Information[edit]

Gene Stechschulte pitched for three years in the major leagues for the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched in 67 games in 2001, which was the last year for Mark McGwire and the first year for Albert Pujols. Stechschulte homered in his first major league at bat, on April 17, 2001, on the first pitch he saw. He was in the game as a pinch-hitter for reliever Mike James and did not pitch.

He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 1996 by the Cardinals, and pitched well as he moved up their organization. Always a reliever, he had 33 saves in 1998 in Single A, 19 in 1999 in Double A, and 26 in 2000 in Triple A. He appeared in 20 games with the Cardinals during 2000, being called up several times from the minors.

In 2001, he was a workhorse, getting 6 saves in his 67 appearance, and posting an ERA lower than league average. He also pitched in the postseason. In 2002, he appeared in 29 games with the Cardinals, with a record of 6-2 and no saves, and also pitched 10 games in Triple A ball with 5 saves.

He was injured part of 2002, when he made his last major league appearance, as well as in 2003, and in 2004 and 2005 pitched 7 games in independent ball.

He became head coach of Ohio Northern University for the 2012 season.
