Biographical Information[edit]
Gene Derby had a terrific partial season for the 1885 Norfolk team in the Eastern League, hitting .373 in 48 games and playing catcher. He then came to the majors in September, 1885 with the 1885 Baltimore Orioles to appear in ten games. While he didn't hit much, the team hit only .219 that year and the regular catcher, Bill Traffley, hit .154. In the following year, the 1886 Orioles hit only .204 as a team and only one regular hit higher than .225.
Derby stayed in the Eastern League in 1886 and again had the highest batting average on his team, the Waterbury Brassmen.
