Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Gary Serum played parts of three years in the majors with the Minnesota Twins.

Born in North Dakota, Serum grew up in Minnesota and attended St. Cloud State University there before being signed by the Twins after a tryout camp in 1975. He reached the majors just two years later, making his big league debut against the California Angels on July 22, 1977. Entering the game in the top of the 7th inning, he gave up a single to the first batter he faced, Rance Mulliniks, but then retired the next six Angels, including Don Baylor, whom he struck out.

He spent all of 1978 at the major league level and threw a five-hitter in his first big league start, against the Oakland Athletics, on April 27th. Overall, he was 9-9 with a 4.10 ERA in 34 outings that summer. He made 20 appearances for Minnesota in 1979, but his earned run average ballooned to 6.61. He was done in the majors after that year but continued to pitch in the minors through 1982.

Following his baseball days, Serum has owned a restaurant in Anoka, Minnesota since the 1990s.
