Biographical Information[edit]

Gary Coffee was a minor league first baseman for five years.

Coffee was taken by the Kansas City Royals in the tenth round of the 1994 amateur draft. In his pro debut, he hit .246/.365/.342 for the GCL Royals. Returning to the club in 1995, he improved to .328/.415/.582 with 11 homers (up from one) and 45 RBI in 52 games. He led the Gulf Coast League in homers (4 more than the runners-up), RBI and slugging and ranked 5th in average. He was named as the All-Star 1B. Baseball America rated him as the league's #10 prospect, one spot behind Carlos Beltran.

In 1996, Coffee eked out a .232/.328/.369 line with 11 home runs and 141 strikeouts for the Lansing Lugnuts. Moving up to the Wilmington Blue Rocks in '97, he again hit 11 homers while striking out 157 times and posting a .222/.318/.330 line. He led the Carolina League in both strikeouts and errors by a first baseman (23). He wrapped up in 1998 with Lansing (.284/.403/.491) and Wilmington (.191/.350/.213).

For his career, Coffee batted .252/.355/.402 with 42 home runs in 420 games.
