Biographical Information

One of seven siblings, Garton Del Savio grew up in the Bronx and was signed by the New York Yankees in 1934. He finally reached the majors as a 29-year-old rookie for the 1943 Philadelphia Phillies, hit .091 in 4 games and making 3 errors at shortstop. He spent most of that year with the Syracuse Chiefs and played in the Little World Series.

In the minors Del Savio spent parts of six seasons with Birmingham.

Del Savio's obituary states that he was lifelong friends with Hank Sauer and that the two of them enlisted in the Coast Guard together during World War II. He played some semi-pro ball in Brooklyn and after baseball was a supervisor for the N.Y. Dept of Sanitation and also worked for a surgical supply company.

The book One Hit Wonders also features him. The book says he voluntarily retired and sat out the 1942 season, coming back in 1943 to make the major league club in spring training. He was then in the National Defense Service the following two years before coming back to play minor league ball again.
