Biographical Information

Fred Lieb was a New York-based sportswriter who covered baseball for seventy years. The first twenty-five years of his career were spent with several papers in New York City. Wealthy from wise investments, he retired from the paper at age 46.

Lieb continued to write, however. He wrote a weekly column for the St. Petersburg Times. He also was often featured in The Sporting News. Lieb was a prolific author, writing over twenty books including several extensive team histories.

The winner of the Spink Award in 1972, Lieb was charter member of the BBWAA and was the last charter member to pass away. He was a member for 68 years and a writer for 70. Lieb joined the BBWAA in 1911, a famous class including Damon Runyon and Heywood Broun. In his later years, he was a member of SABR.

Lieb was posthumously honored with the Henry Chadwick Award in 2013.
