Biographical Information[edit]

Fred Mims played for three seasons in the minor leagues.

Mims was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 5th round of the 1969 amateur draft out of junior college, but continued on to the University of Iowa. He played both baseball and basketball at Iowa. The San Diego Padres took him in the 13th round of the 1971 amateur draft but he did not sign. In the 1971 Pan American Games, he homered in the Gold Medal game but Team USA lost a tough 4-3 battle to the Cuban national team. Mims was not the only US outfielder named Fred - there was also Fred Lynn. Mims was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the January 1972 secondary draft.

Assigned to the Cocoa Astros, he hit .282/.381/.483 in 1972. He led the Florida East Coast League with 7 triples and was 8th in batting average. Moving to first base for most of 1973, he hit .293/.368/.512 for the Cedar Rapids Astros. He had double-digit totals of doubles (24), triples (12), homers (14) and steals (16 in 23 tries). He led the Midwest League in triples and again was 8th in average but led the MWL's first basemen with 20 errors. Back with Cedar Rapids for 1974, he struggled at .225/.297/.345 in 64 games to end his career. He had slugged .463 in his three seasons in the minors.

Mims returned to his alma mater, working for over 30 years in the school's Athletic Department. His roles included assistant baseball coach, athletic counselor, Assistant Athletic Director and Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Student Service and Compliance.
