Biographical Information

Frank Walker played five years in the big leagues, appearing mostly in center field. He had over 100 at-bats only once, with the Detroit Tigers in 1918 where the regular centerfielder was Ty Cobb; Cobb was in 92 games at the position while Walker was in 34.

Frank was born in Enoree, SC, located in the northern part of the state. He attended Randolph-Macon College in Virginia and is the only major leaguer through 2009 to have done so.

He played at least 16 seasons in the minors, with a batting average of .331 from 1915-1931. He hit at least .370 three separate times, although mostly he wasn't playing at the highest minor league level. His teams were mostly in the South - he spent five years with Rocky Mount and four with Greenville.

He managed eight seasons, some of which with Rocky Mount and Greenville.

An article about baseball in Rocky Mount focuses on Walker. It says he started playing minor league ball in 1914, and he thought his baseball career was over in 1919 when he got word that his father had died and he was the guardian for his sister. Instead, he played with the local ballclub, and after some more minor and major league play elsewhere, eventually became general manager and president of the Rocky Mount team. He also owned a successful laundry business.
