Frank Moffett played a key role in the early years of Knoxville baseball.

Moffett organized the Knoxville Reds, the first pro team in Knoxville history, in 1897. He hit .286 and managed them to a 22-10 record, first in the Southeastern League. He became the first true head coach at the University of Tennessee baseball team, in 1903. He would go 90-47-1 as their coach from 1903-1905, 1907-1910 and 1918. He produced six future major leaguers, most notably Hank DeBerry. In 1904, he guided a Knoxville team to second in the Tennessee-Alabama League.

He managed the Knoxville Appalachians to the Southeastern League pennant in 1910 (50-30) and to second place a year later (58-38) in the Appalachian League. He guided the Knoxville Reds from 1912 until early 1914, finishing second twice more in the Appalachian League then finished 1914 with the Valdosta Millionaires. From 1922-1924, he piloted the Knoxville Pioneers, winning an Appalachian League title in 1924. He guided the Kingsport Indians in 1925 and Knoxville Smokies in 1926.
