Francisco Ortiz pitched three years in the minor leagues.

Ortiz was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 49th round of the 2005 amateur draft. He did not sign and Pittsburgh chose him in the 18th round of the 2006 amateur draft. That time, he signed. Francisco made his pro debut with the 2006 GCL Pirates, going 2-1 with a 2.92 ERA in nine outings (three starts).

In 2007, the right-hander fell to 0-3, 8.84 for the GCL Pirates with 17 walks and 24 hits in 18 1/3 innings. He split 2008 between the GCL Pirates (1-1, Sv, 2.33 in 11 G) and Hickory Crawdads (26 H, 12.91 ERA in 15 1/3 IP and 10 G).

Ortiz is on Puerto Rico's roster for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
