Biographical Information

Florentino Alfonso has been the only pitcher in the Cuban Serie Nacional to lose a no-hitter. He did so on March 16, 1968 for the Granjeros, dropping a 1-0 decision to Camagüey in the Year of the Pitcher.

Alfonso was the winning pitcher in the Cuban All-Star Game in 1963 and led the Serie Nacional with five completes games in 1964-1965. His six hit batsmen in 1966-1967 tied Gaspar Pérez for the lead.

Alfonso was 23-21 with a 1.97 ERA, .178 opponent average and 188 walks in 375 innings in 68 career games (51 starts). Had he qualified, he would have tied Santiago Mederos for the sixth-lowest ERA in Serie Nacional history.
