Biographical Information

Frank "Flip" Lafferty pitched in 1876 and played outfield in 1877 in the new National League.

The book Gateway to the Majors: Williamsport and Minor League Baseball mentions a pitcher named Lafferty who had pitched for the semi-pro Wilmington team in 1875 and came to Williamsport in 1876, and then "later played professionally".

The book American Gladiator, about Pete Browning, mentions a match-up between Lafferty and the young Browning when Browning was pitching for an amateur Louisville team called the Eclipse in 1877 and Lafferty was with the Louisville Grays. In the game on August 3, Lafferty no-hit the Eclipse. Interestingly, while Lafferty pitched in this exhibition game, he did not pitch in any National League games for Louisville that year.

The Sporting Life of February 19, 1910, carried his obituary, calling him the "noted pitcher for the Quicksteps, of Wilmington, Del., in the early 70's". The obituary said he died suddenly of heart disease in his saloon in Wilmington.
