Biographical Information

Fidel Mejía was a shortstop who played for the Dominican national team in the 1972 Amateur World Series, 1974 Central American and Caribbean Games (Silver Medal) and 1975 Pan American Games. In the 1974 Games, he hit .257/.341/.257 with 9 runs and 5 RBI in 9 games. He was 6th in the tournament in runs. He fielded only .825 with 7 errors in 9 games, tying Alcides Curet for second in errors, one behind Burnett Thomas. He turned down offers from major league teams to focus on his medical career. He would become head of the Dominican Medical Association. He coached for the Dominican Republic when they won the 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games, the first baseball Gold for the Dominicans in 20 years (it would be 28 years until the next one). He was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
