Biographical Information[edit]

Federico Castagnini was the first player born and raised in Italy to be picked in the MLB amateur draft.

Castagnini came to the US in 2008 to play high school baseball. He played for Italy in the 2008 World Junior Championship. In the 2009 European Junior Championship, he hit .391/.444/.435 with 8 runs and 6 RBI in six games as the cleanup hitter and shortstop for the Azzurri, who won it all. Castagnini was named the event's MVP. He batted .507 as a high school senior. He also played in the Italian Baseball League that season, going 1 for 6 with a walk and 3 whiffs for Godo. In junior college in 2011, he hit .294 and stole 16 bases in 20 tries. His sophomore year, he improved to .361 with 61 runs and 67 RBI to win All-Conference honors. Transferring to Creighton, he batted .320/.395/.385 with 33 runs in 44 games in 2013. The Baltimore Orioles took him in the 30th round of the 2013 amateur draft, and he made his pro debut with the Aberdeen IronBirds on July 15th.
