Excuse-me single

An excuse-me single is a base hit on a ball that is not squarely hit by the batter, either because he was trying to check his swing, broke his bat, or hit the ball with an undesirable part of the bat, such as the handle or the tip. The ball will typically land in front of the outfielders who are helpless to do anything about it.
