Biographical Information[edit]

Eugene Gartland played football and baseball at St. Louis University High School and was a pitcher for the Newark Moundsmen of the Ohio State League in the farm system of the St. Louis Browns during the 1945 season. He posted a record of 3-3 with a 4.11 earned run average in seven games. In 46 innings pitched, he gave up 44 hits and 31 walks while notching 29 strikeouts.

Gartland attended St. Louis University, then served in the US Navy from 1947 to 1949 on an oil tanker. For three decades, he ran Gartland Company, a plumbing and irrigation company in Richmond Heights, MO. He was an avid tennis player who competed in pro-am tournaments and founded the South Hampshire Racquet Club in 1975. Eugene served on the planning commission and library board in Richmond Heights, and he was the chairman of the building committee for the city's former library that opened in 1972.
