Biographical Information[edit]
Ernie Ross pitched two games for the Baltimore Orioles in 1902. He was 16 years younger than his teammate, player-manager Wilbert Robinson. Ernie also played three seasons in the New England League.
His gravestone refers to him as "E.B. 'Curly' Ross".
"The Baltimores . . . had in the box Eben (sic) Ross, of the Lawrence team. Some here in New England think that he cannot pitch up an alley, but he held the Bostons down to two hits in the last six innings he pitched, and gave but one base on balls in the last five innings. It was stated that the Bostons would slaughter him if he were tried again, but this did not trouble Ross at all, for he said he was ready to try again, and was satisfied he could pitch a better game. . . Query: Had Ross pitched against the Nationals how much better would he have done?" - Sporting Life's Boston correspondent, September 27, 1902 issue, about Ernie Ross's major league debut
