Elmira Royals

From BR Bullpen

While the teams from Elmira, NY have very frequently been called the Elmira Pioneers, there was a one-year break in 1971 when the city was home to a Kansas City Royals farm team. That year the city was home to the Elmira Royals, who went 78-61 to finish first in the American Division of the Eastern League. They then defeated the National Division champion Trois-Rivières Aigles 3 games to 1 in the finals to take the title in their sole season of play. 52,949 fans came out to see Harry Malmberg's club. The only All-Star was 3B Gary Sanserino (.279/~.343/.352, 5th in the EL in average). Jim Whisman (9-9, 2.38) was second in the league in ERA.
