Biographical Information[edit]

Eliezer Álvarez began his pro career in 2012 after signing on July 2, 2011 with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent, debuting with the DSL Cardinals. After struggling mightily during that season, Álvarez moved to US Rookie Ball but saw his playing time evaporate. It wasn't until after a strong 2014 season with the GCL Cardinals, during which he hit .353, that Eliezer saw his playing time return. Álvarez continued to hit in the Appalachian League in 2015, then received his first Single-A playing time with the Peoria Chiefs in 2016. It was with Peoria that Álvarez broke out, as he ranked 1st in the league in stolen bases, 2nd in doubles, 2nd in on-base percentage, 3rd in slugging percentage, 2nd in OPS, and 4th in batting average, falling just short of budding superprospect Eloy Jimenez in most of these categories. Following the 2016 season he was selected to St. Louis's 40-man Roster.

Things went south for Álvarez in 2017 though, as he was limited to just 61 games and struggled in 54 with the Springfield Cardinals in his first AA action. During the season he was dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies for Juan Nicasio. Álvarez never got into any regular-season game action in the Phillies system, however, as he was designated and sold to the Texas Rangers before the start of the 2018 season. Álvarez spent most of the 2018 season with the Frisco RoughRiders, but also spent a short spell in the Majors, receiving a May 7th call-up to Texas before being sent back to Frisco the next day. Álvarez would end up playing all 108 of his 2018 appearances with the RoughRiders to little avail, as he limped to a .228 average. During this time Álvarez was outrighted off Texas's 40-man roster. Álvarez returned to Frisco in 2019 but continued to struggle before becoming a free agent at the end of the year. Following the 2019 season Eliezer joined the Seattle Mariners organization on a Minor League contract, but was released in May.
