Biographical Information

Eduardo Cárdenas played 19 seasons in Cuba and one in Italy. Primarily a third baseman, he had over 2,000 career hits though he never led the league in any department. He was never on the Cuban national team for a major tournament but was with them for game one of the 1999 Baltimore Orioles-Cuban National Team Exhibition Series.

Eduardo debuted in 1983-1984 and would be a fixture on the Matanzas club. He would hit .317/.391/.379 in 7,533 plate appearances. Not a slugger, he had 28 career home runs. He stole 124 bases but was caught 93 times. Possessing a sharp batting eye, he had 772 walks to 433 strikeouts. He fielded .952. Through 2004-2005, Eduardo was among the Cuban Serie Nacional career leaders in hits (2,077 9th, between Javier Méndez and Orestes Kindelán), runs (1,029, 18th, between Gabriel Pierre and Lázaro Junco) and walks (19th, between Alejo O'Reilly and Fausto Álvarez).

In 1995-1996, Cuba let several players appear in Italy's Serie A1, including Cárdenas, Leonel Moa, Faustino Corrales, Fernando Tejeda and Evenecer Godínez. Cárdenas hit .418/.492/.575 with 18 doubles, 42 runs and 22 walks in 42 games for Caserta BC in 1995 while fielding .921 at SS. He was second in the league in doubles, behind Francesco Casolari, and tied Brad Komminsk for third in average between Jessie Reid and Roberto Bianchi.
