Biographical Information[edit]

Edgar Hernández played briefly in Cuba then played, managed and coached in Spain. His sons Omar Hernández and Frank Hernández both signed with MLB teams. [1]

He was 4 for 19 with a run, a walk and a hit-by-pitch for the Metropolitanos in 2002-2003. He handled 20 chances error-free and caught 2 of 4 would-be base-stealers. [2] He was playing in Spain by 2008, hitting .258/.288/.308 for CB Viladecans, the team his son Omar would debut for nine years later. He caught 39.5% of would-be base-stealers, tying Franklin Tua Jr. for the most caught-stealing in the Division de Honor. [3]

In 2009, he slumped to .210/.292/.250 for Viladecans but fielded .990 and caught 48.7% of runners. [4] He was player-manager for CB Sant Boi in 2010, going 6 for 30 with 3 walks but still dazzling on D (5 of 9 caught stealing, no errors in 98 chances. [5] A player-coach for Sant Boi in '11, he hit .179/.273/.179. [6] He was 3 for 20 in '12. [7] That appears to have been his last playing season.

He coached for Spain in the 2016 European Junior Championship, when his son Omar was on the team. [8] In 2018, both his sons were on the Spanish junior team and he coached for them. [9]
