Biographical Information[edit]

Ed Walker pitched for the Cleveland Bronchos in 1902-03. He was the same age as Nap Lajoie. He was a huge man for the times at 6 ' 5 " and 242 lbs.

Walker was born in England in 1874, the same year that Harry Smith and Hobe Ferris were also born there.

An article in the Ogden Standard newspaper of June 22, 1909, has a photo of Ed, standing next to two much-smaller players. He looks absolutely huge compared to them. The paper referred to him as a freak in physical stature, although he'd be relatively ordinary by today's standards for pitchers. The article argues that he was fine in the majors until someone bunted on him, implying presumably that with his size he couldn't field. He also started the 1909 season hitting .480 in his first 10 games for Zanesville.

Walker played for Zanesville from 1907-09, hitting well for them (he hit .317 in 1907) and generally pitching well.

Ed was still pitching in the minors in 1910 at age 35, going 18-8 for Quincy.
