Biographical Information[edit]

The brother of Steve Ontiveros, Ed Ontiveros pitched two seasons in the minor leagues, going 11-12.

Ontiveros was taken by the Houston Astros in the 21st round of the 1968 amateur draft. He debuted that year with the Covington Astros, going 5-5 with a 2.90 ERA. Of the 7 ERA qualifiers in the Appalachian League, he finished third. He tied for the Appy League lead in starts (14) and shutouts (2) while leading in innings piotched (90) and hit batters (6). He allowed 66 hits and struck out 98, but walked 41.

In 1969, Ed was with the Cocoa Astros. He was 6-7 with a 2.30 ERA. He remained hard-to-hit (97 hits in 125 innings) but walked 63. Had he qualified, Ontiveros would have ranked sixth in the Florida State League in ERA.
