Biographical Information[edit]
Ed Keegan played parts of three seasons in the majors, giving up 23 earned runs in 23 innings of big league work.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Keegan attended Haddonfield High School before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1957. He made his pro debut that summer with the High Point-Thomasville Hi-Toms, posting a 3-2 record and a 2.20 ERA in 12 games. He spent most of the next two seasons with the Williamsport Grays, going 13-9 in 1958 and 10-7 the following year.
The 20-year-old earned a late-season call-up to the majors in 1959 and made his big league debut on August 24th, starting against the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, he was ineffective in his first game, retiring only 1 of the 8 batters he faced and giving up 4 earned runs. He didn't perform much better in his next two outings, going 0-3 with an 18.00 ERA in 3 games for the Phillies that year.
Keegan was back in the minors in 1960, and following the season, he was selected by the Kansas City Athletics in the 1960 Rule V draft. He pitched in 6 games for Kansas City in 1961, before being returned to the Phillies in May. After spending the rest of the year with the Buffalo Bisons, he was back in the bigs with Philadelphia in 1962, appearing in his final 4 big league games. However, shoulder injuries soon ended his career.
He and Bob Keegan, no relation but his near contemporary, are the only two major leaguers (through 2008) with the last name Keegan.
