Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Ed Freed got four hits in his first major league game for the Philadelphia Phillies on September 11, 1942. He joined the Army the following season and never returned to the majors after World War II.

Although Fred Clarke got five hits in his first game in 1894, no 20th Century newbie did better than Ed Freed, although several others, including Kirby Puckett and Willie McCovey, tied him with four in their first game. Source: Elias Book of Baseball Records, 2013 Edition.

Freed posted a strong offensive line of .303/.378/.455 during his time in the majors. Each of those numbers was far better than anyone else who had at least ten at-bats on that year's Phillies team.

Freed's minor league career began in 1940 and ended in 1950. Most of it was spent at Trenton and at Rock Hill. He managed the Rock Hill Chiefs while serving as a player-manager in 1947 and 1948.

After baseball he was a textile worker. [1]
