Biographical Information[edit]
Duncan Campbell, a powerfully built third baseman from Nicaragua, played in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor-league system from 1958 to 1968. In all probability, he was signed by superscout Howie Haak on one of Haak's trips through Latin America.
Campbell had excellent seasons with the Asheville Tourists in 1961 and 1962 (.311, 27 HR, 94 RBI, 95 R the latter year). He made it as far as Triple-A in 1961 and 1963, but did not hit well at that level. He never got a shot in the majors.
Campbell died in an auto accident in 1969, on the road from Managua to Masaya. Note that he probably shaved a couple of years off his age for U.S. professional purposes. Nicaraguan sources indicate that he started to play at higher levels at home in 1951, aged 16, and that he was 34 when he passed away.
