Biographical Information[edit]
Doug Willey pitched collegiately at Franklin Pierce University and the University of Arkansas. He earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Franklin Pierce and is working on a master's degree in education from Arkansas as of 2020. The Los Angeles Angels drafted Willey in the 32nd round of the 2016 MLB amateur draft and he appeared in 17 games for the Orem Owlz and pitched to a 6.53 ERA with two saves in 30 1/3innings that year.
Willey began his coaching career in 2018 as pitching coach for the Syracuse Spartans, a collegiate wooden bat team that plays in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. He returned to Arkansas and served as a graduate assistant coach during the 2019 season.
The Chicago Cubs hired Willey to be the AZL Cubs Blue pitching coach in 2020 before the minor league season was cancelled due to COVID-19. He was a pitching coach for the ACL Cubs in 2021-2022. Willey then moved to Xavier University as pitching coach in 2023.
