Biographical Information[edit]

Doug Vontz pitched two years in the minor leagues, going 16-10. In 1986, he went 8-1 with a 2.49 ERA for the independent Salt Lake City Trappers. He was second in the Pioneer League in ERA trailing only Joe Lazor. He tied Mike Kolovitz for the league lead in victories. He made the Pioneer League All-Star team. That drew the interest of the Montréal Expos, who signed him. In 1987, Vontz was 8-9 with 5 saves and a 2.09 ERA in 41 games for the Burlington Expos and hit .500. Had he qualified, he would have been third in the Midwest League in ERA behind Keith Brown and Trevor Wilson. His 17 decisions without a start might be the Organized Baseball record.
