Biographical Information

Doug Opperman played two seasons in the minors.

Opperman won the National Marble Championship in 1940 before a crowd of 5,000 people. He later signed with his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates, hitting .184/.229/.262 in 38 games for the 1946 Salisbury Pirates, with 31 K in 103 AB. He fielded .878 in 21 games at 3B, his main position. He moved to the New York Yankees' Butler Yankees in 1947, batting .259 and slugging .373. He later was an iron worker. He was nearly crushed by a beam from a crane when working on the Fort Duquesne Bridge and had to dive into the Allegheny River to survive. He later worked on the U.S. Steel Tower, injuring his back when he fell from the second floor. Following that injury, he was a driver then opened and ran Bellevue Carpet.
