Biographical Information[edit]
Doug Harvey was a star defenseman in the National Hockey League from 1947-1968. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973.
Harvey played for two full years for the Ottawa Nationals in the Border League plus a few games in two other years. With very little baseball experience under his belt, he made his debut in 1947 hitting .400 in only 10 games. In 1948 he hit .340, 4 HR, 73 RBI with 107 runs and 24 SB. In 1949 he hit .351, with 14 HR, 109 RBI with 121 runs and 30 SB. He led the league in R, RBI, and AVG. After 10 more games in 1950, Harvey quit baseball in order to concentrate on hockey, turning down offers from the Boston Braves and Boston Red Sox to sign with their organizations. His cumulative line for 238 minor league games reads .344, 18 HR, 187 RBI with 243 runs and 58 SB.
Although he had not played much baseball before turning pro, he was a naturally gifted athlete who excelled at all the sports he tried. That included playing softball, rugby, badminton, track lacrosse and boxing. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, and joined the Nationals as a favor to Thomas Gorman, former GM of the NHL's Montréal Canadiens and owner of the Ottawa baseball team.
He should not be confused with umpire Doug Harvey.
