Biographical Information[edit]

Harry Root "Doc" Shanley was in five games with the St. Louis Browns as a shortstop in 1912. He also had a minor league career from 1912-1924.

Shanley was born in Granbury, TX and attended Washington University in St. Louis, going into the minors in 1912. He was by far the top hitter for the 1912 Burlington Pathfinders, hitting .370 with 15 home runs for a team on which no other regular hit over .290 or had more than 6 home runs. In response, the Browns gave him the chance at age 23 to play five games in September. It was his only major league experience.

Shanley moved around a lot in the minors, never getting two full seasons in a row with any one team. He did play parts of three seasons with the Des Moines Boosters - 14 games in 1915, 39 games in 1917 and 23 games in 1918. He also had parts of three seasons with the Denver Bears - 55 games in 1917, 129 games in 1922 (hitting .325 with 11 triples) and 36 games in 1923.

Through 2024, there has been only one other big leaguer named Shanley - Jim Shanley.
