Diego Sandino won two pitching Triple Crowns in Nicaragua's amateur leagues. In 2000, he won 14 games, had a 1.15 ERA and struck out 82 for the 4th pitching Triple Crown in league history. Seven years later, he led in wins (8), K (48) and ERA (1.34) to match Porfi Altamirano as the only two-time Triple Crown winners in the circuit.
In the 1999 Pan American Games, he relieved Alvaro López in the 8th with a 2-2 tie against the Dominican national team and threw two shutout innings while Nicaragua rallied to give him the win. He had a 1.87 ERA in the 2003 Pan American Games, beating the Bahamas in his lone decision in three games; he led Nicaragua with 19 1/3 IP.
