Biographical Information[edit]
Dick Urlage was a replacement umpire in the National League during two different strikes by the regular umpire. At the start of the 1979 season, he worked 5 games at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, OH during the work stoppage, and came back to work one game in 1991 when a threatened strike was thwarted just before the start of the regular season, but not soon enough for the umpires to make their way to the Opening Day assignments; he was again called into duty in Cincinnati for one game.
He played minor league baseball in the New York Giants organization from 1951 to 1955. A catcher, his busiest season came in 1952 when he played 112 games for the Muskogee Giants of the Western Association, hitting .203. He then played semi-pro baseball. Starting in 1954, he began officiating in three different sports, including college baseball, but also football and basketball. He umpired two NCAA Division II World Series.
