Biographical Information[edit]

Dick Matthews pitched for the 1932 Monroe Monarchs, the team's only year as a major league team. It was also Matthews' only year in the majors and he was very good at 11-2, 2.17 (143 ERA+) and hit .205/.225/.231. He was 6th in the Negro Southern League in ERA, 5th in ERA+ (between Elbert Williams and Jim Willis), 1st in wins (one ahead of Barney Morris), tied Harry Cunningham for 4th in games pitched (16), 1st in starts (14), tied for 3rd in complete games (9, behind Willie Foster and Sam Crawford), tied Williams for 2nd in shutouts (3, one behind Melvin Powell), tied Foster for 2nd in IP (116 1/3, 10 behind Morris) and 3rd in WHIP (.95, behind Williams and Roy Parnell).
