Dick Egan played nine seasons in the National League during the dead-ball era. While not usually a strong hitter, he was several times among the league leaders in stolen bases and sacrifice hits.

In March 1914, Egan was the subject of rivalry between the National League and the new Federal League, with the Brooklyn club announcing it had signed Egan to a three-year deal (and Egan denying that he had signed it).

The SABR biography of Steve Evans indicates that Egan was part of a world tour after the 1913 season, and that Evans and Egan won the shipboard shuffleboard league competition.
