Biographical Information[edit]

Deron Johnson played three seasons in the minors then became a scout.

Undrafted out of college, Johnson signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. An outfielder, he split 1988 between the Watertown Pirates (1 for 22, 3 BB) and Princeton Pirates (.269/.329/.462, 16 R, 8 SB, 0 CS in 20 G). In 1989, the St. Mary's alumnus put up a .245/.287/.405 line as a starter for the Welland Pirates. He led his club in doubles (14), triples (4, tied with Austin Manahan) and RBI (31). He ended his playing career with the 1990 Augusta Pirates, batting just .179/.295/.282. Overall, he had hit .225/.291/.370 in 113 games in professional baseball, with 100 strikeouts in 378 at-bats and 17 steals in 25 tries.

Johnson was an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco in 1992-1993. From 1994-2007, he scouted for the Minnesota Twins, the last ten years as their West Coast Supervisor. In September 2007, he became Minnesota's Scouting Director, a role he still held as of 2013. From 2005-2010, he was also the Twins' Advance Scout for the postseason.

He also served as hitting coach at Poway High School.
